How Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust left a centralised framework for a fixed contract, better support and a £1m refund.
Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust provides acute healthcare for more than 1.2 million people, across three main hospitals and many smaller sites.
As part of a centralised procurement framework, it faced escalating energy costs tied up in a flexible pricing strategy it found confusing. It also had a complex estate of meters and too little support from its framework provider.
We carried out a full market review and helped the trust leave its framework, working through objections from stakeholders who tried to block the transfer. The new contract was procured through our legally compliant Dynamic Marketplace.
We then took on day-to-day management of the estate and its contracts, and used Etainabl to improve meter management and carbon reporting.
The prices we found were £4 million lower over 2.5 years, and fixed, which gives the trust budget certainty.
Etainabl analysis found a non-consuming meter that was being billed on historic estimated usage, which led to a refund of more than £1 million from the supplier. The trust has renewed its contract with us, and next we will look at water supply, water audits and voltage optimisation together.
