How Do I Reduce Carbon and Business Energy Costs?

Many UK businesses are wasting 20p in every £1 they spend on energy. Rising energy prices and growing concerns about our carbon footprint means it makes sense that all companies are thinking of ways to effectively cut their business energy bills. Follow these seven simple steps to help you save thousands on your business energy bills…

How to cut your business’s carbon emissions, save energy and money:

1. Fit energy saving light bulbs – LEDs can save 90% of lighting energy costs.

2. Replace your old refrigerator/ freezer if it is over 15 years old, with a new one with an energy efficiency rating of A++.

3. Get an energy audit – Many utility companies offer free business energy audits to their commercial customers. It’s a great way to figure out where your money is going every month.

4. Take advantage of natural sunlight – Maximum daylight and use artificial lights in dark areas only.

5. Control your heating and cooling – By keeping your office temperature one degree down during winter and one degree up during summer can reduce the power it uses by up to 10%.

6. Take advantage of tax breaks for energy efficiency – Local government may provide tax incentives when you use energy saving appliances that help to reduce your energy usage.

7. Switch your energy supplier – Ensure you’re on the right tariff for your business energy usage. Get a better deal now.

By using these steps above, you’ll be promoting a healthy workplace environment. Applying more efficient technologies will enhance savings and choosing the right business energy plan for your needs will potentially guarantee these gains are maintained for years to come.

The Kia Oval ground hits sustainability for six!

International cricket ground, the Kia Oval, has taken major steps towards making the transition to a low-carbon and sustainable future.

The Oval, a historic sporting venue in south London, and home to Surrey County Cricket Club, has announced plans to eliminate single-use plastics and run entirely on renewable energy.

Starting with the new 2018 season, the club will work to ban all plastic straws, introduce compostable coffee cups and gradually phase-out the use of plastic bags. It is targeting 2020 to become entirely plastic free across its entire business.

At the same time, it has signed a deal with Fidelity Energy and French multinational ENGIE to supply the ground with 100 percent renewable power. The partnership, which has been in place since last year, will run until at least 2022 and save an estimated 6,252 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Surrey CCC Chief Executive, Richard Gould, said: “The club has always been very conscious of reducing its impact on the environment wherever possible and, after a great deal of thought, has decided to make this ambitious commitment.”

Since 2015, the ground has only served beer in recyclable glasses, and is working on extending this to soft drinks. It also has an ongoing partnership with Sky to promote reusable plastic, which has led to the construction of 20 permanent water fountains.

To achieve its new plastic-free goal, the club “will need to work with our Members, fans, partners and staff to analyse all areas of the business and work out where we need to introduce alternative products and ways of working,” concluded Gould.

Paul Havell, co-founder of Fidelity Energy, added: “We are delighted to have secured a 100 percent renewable green electricity contract for the Kia Oval and are thrilled to be able to help the club achieve their goal of reducing their carbon footprint. This move demonstrates their commitment to renewables and sustainability.”

Entanet

Fidelity slashes Entanet carbon footprint

Wholesale voice and data provider Entanet, selected Fidelity Energy to provide 100% renewable energy for its own operations. The solution uses wind, solar and tidal energy as its sole energy source, meaning Entanet can reduce its carbon foot print by 866 tonnes of carbon.

Fidelity Energy’s continuing commitment to green energy solutions has given us access to perhaps the most diverse and broad ranges of renewable energy suppliers in the UK. This makes us uniquely placed to offer competitive and realistic energy solutions for a wide range of businesses.

Darren Farnden, Entanet’s Head of Marketing, commented:
“The new contract saved us money but the most important factor for us was the reduction in our carbon footprint. This is a great message for our business and shows a real commitment to our Corporate Social Responsibility. It also gives channel partners an edge when bidding for government and CSR focused businesses

“Fidelity are well known to us from their work within the telecoms channel. We knew Fidelity Energy Managing Director John Haw well from his days in the service provider channel and it made sense to see if they could help us. Fidelity are also now proactively managing all our energy contracts and bill validation and are suggesting ideas of where we can lower our energy use.

John Haw, Fidelity Energy MD, commented:
“Entanet is a great channel business and one that we are pleased to be working with on their estate. Proactive contract management, bill validation and lowering of their carbon footprint were all key requirements. Fidelity Energy ran the tender process for them, recommended the most appropriate supplier and helped them balance carbon reduction, service and price. It’s great to be working with the management team at Entanet during this exciting phase of their business.”

Utilities for Business

IT and mobile security specialist Cybermo is the latest ICT channel business to add energy services to its portfolio alongside Fidelity Energy.

The Winchester based company has set up a new division – Utilities for Business – and is now successfully offering energy solutions to its existing telecoms and IT customers, plus new businesses within the manufacturing sector, care homes and serviced offices.

The new division had already made over £15k in profit and has secured a pipeline of energy business of around £100k.

“We were formerly Opus Telecom, a Unify partner and sold the telecoms base to NIX communications in the summer”, said Director Matt Boyce.

“We’ve been trading for over 15 years as a fully independent mobile provider, specialist SME security provider for IT security, Microsoft partner and partner of Fortinet security products distributor Exclusive Networks. Our aim is to secure businesses against constantly evolving threats easily and affordably.”

So why has the company decided to move into energy supply?

“I can see why some telecoms or IT companies would be cautious to diversify, but if you do not diversify as a business then youre not moving forward and its down to how it is pitched. Fidelity provide all the tools to make it easy. We first heard about them in a magazine feature and we knew their MD John Haw from his Gamma days. When John came and presented the proposition to us the attraction was clear. Energy provided us with another revenue stream, it was easy to administer and set-up and ultimately made the customers more ‘sticky’.

“Also, it was very easy to get going. We have a dedicated Fidelity Energy account manager who is superb, the Fidelity portal is very easy to use and we are now self-sufficient with processing quotes.”

Boyce says Utilities for Business is aiming to be ahead of the curve in giving customers the best possible energy deals.

“We are slightly different and aim to be a solution type provider for energy so we monitor the raw material prices and produce reports each week. Ultimately, we are more informed than the major suppliers which is a key differentiator for us. In the main, customers have been receptive because of how we pitch it and Fidelity allow us to be fully independent with the suppliers which is a great benefit.

“Selling energy is a great opportunity; its a very transactional model and the customers ultimately sign a with the supplier such as British Gas, so they still have the security of big supplier but the customer care of a dedicated company with a face. Anyone with a customer base should speak to Fidelity, added Boyce.

360 Group

Energy is turning full circle for 360

Cambridgeshire based reseller 360 Group has warned comms and IT providers to start selling energy to customers before energy brokers move into their territories.

“If you aren’t selling energy to your customers, someone else is and you are leaving the door open for an energy broker to walk in and review their comms as well”, said Group Managing Director Russell Davis, who is now successfully selling energy services to his customers alongside Fidelity Energy.

Davis also believes ICT solutions providers should bear in mind the reputation they have built for quality of service when considering adding energy supply to their portfolios.

“We are utilising our current relationships and trading energy under our trusted name and brand as energy companies get such bad press for the service they offer. We are used to winning through effort and knowledge of our market. We are inspired to maximise our efforts. Everything we do, we do well.”

360 have solid experience of embracing new technologies and their services now encompass a full unified communications suite complemented by IT services and a growing IoT (internet of Things) division.

When exploring the energy opportunity Davis was pleased to re-engage with Fidelity Energy MD John Haw, who he knew well from his previous Managing Director role at Gamma.

“John understands we have a loyal customer base who trust 360 Group. Utilities are required by all our customers and I know we have a better relationship with them than their current energy supplier and with Fidelity Energy’s commercials and sales support we have been able to offer a compelling service to our customer base.

“We have done well to date and we are building on the success month-on-month as our experience with energy grows and we are better equipped within the market place. I am confident that we will have a successful energy arm in 2017

“Fidelity offers full support on every opportunity so all we do is get the bills and they advise from there. We are now at the point where we can self-serve through their portal, but Fidelity are always on hand to help if needs be. Fidelity also offer full sales support and now with a fully integrated E-signature option on their portal you can add a customer, credit check them, get quotes from 20 suppliers, and receive an e-signed contract within 10 minutes compared to the standard 1-2 day turnaround from most brokers.”

Powering past the £50m Milestone!

We are pleased to announce that as of last week we have secured over £50m worth of energy supplies since our launch 3 years ago.

By changing the way businesses procure their electricity and gas we have been able to empower our partners to service their client needs through our simple and effective portal.

MD John Haw said:

This is a significant achievement for the business and testament to the work the team and our partners have put in.  The portal, a set of exclusive renewable energy offers and marketing support are giving our partners an edge in the market. Couple that with their strong customer relationships and it’s a winning formula.

Our recipe for success lies in our proven expertise and leading edge technology which allows us to:

  • Buy at the right time by constantly monitoring the market. We can forward buy our clients’ energy at the low points in a constantly fluctuating market.
  • Typically save a client between 10 and 20%, and in some cases up to 50% off their current bill.
  • Understand a business and tailor our solution to lower usage. Our team of dedicated account managers will work with clients to agree a smart meter roll out. Smart meters can drastically help cut energy bills.
  • Multiple suppliers. We contract with 17 major energy companies who all bring different skills and pricing. Prices can vary by 28% between the highest and the lowest quote for each client
  • Supplier Vetting: We also heavily vet suppliers we add to the portfolio. We don’t let suppliers with poor service or billing standards into the supply chain.

Beacon School

The Beacon School had been procuring energy through multiple suppliers for some years. Not proactively managed this had left the school with numerous contracts, differing end dates and management issues relating to their energy bills. Renewals had been missed on a number of occasions and this had resulted in them incurring unnecessary costs on “out of contract rates” imposed by the suppliers.

Keen to get a grip of their energy procurement, costs and management they engaged Fidelity Energy.

We went to our suppliers looking to streamline the school’s supply contracts. Our overall aim was to simplify the way the school was billed for their energy. At the time, the market was on the rise, so, being proactive we looked to buy at a long-term locked-in price to secure the price.

This would provide the school with budget certainty for a significant period and prevent their bills from being effected by future energy price rises.

With Fidelity Energy’s market expertise and skilled team it didn’t take long to identify the best deal for the school. The end result was to deliver a single supplier for each gas and electricity contract, with co-terminus end dates. Meaning that renewals were simple and the price was locked in.

This left the school with the peace of mind that their energy costs were set for the foreseeable future and they could allocate the savings to other resources. Fidelity continues to supply proactive energy management to the school, ensuring long-term good energy management.

M Restaurants

M Restaurants was founded by Martin Williams, having moved on from 9 years as Managing Director of the highly acclaimed Gaucho restaurants chain. M prides itself on delivering excellent quality and excellent service.

We were thrilled when they asked us to look into their energy requirements for them. They required an ongoing energy package which would give them competitive rates across their restaurants. They also wanted to be sure that the energy tariff benefits would also suit their requirements.

Their two largest energy expenditures were on electricity and gas. Running large, busy kitchens required almost constant use of both resources and as a result the energy bill was a major cost.

We began by looking through our bank of suppliers and searching for gas and electricity deals that would match with their requirements. Approaching suppliers directly we were able to broker deals on their behalf, helping build up a really diverse range of options.

What we delivered for them were electricity and gas contracts with varied term options that perfectly matched their needs. We were able to save the restaurant chain over £57,000 in energy costs over the contract terms.

Founder and CEO of M Restaurants

We got in touch with Fidelity Energy in June 2015 when our existing energy contracts were up for review. Fidelity Energy demonstrated a sound understanding of both our industry and an in-depth knowledge of the UK energy market and delivered new contracts that have benefited our organisation. We were provided with recommendations for both electricity and gas, the different term options available and the benefits of working with each supplier. The new contracts offered by Fidelity Energy resulted in M Restaurant saving £57,715 over the term of the new contracts. Fidelity Energy now checks our bills to ensure these are correct and proactively contacts us about the existing contracts to make sure we are always on the best deal. As a fast-growing chain of restaurants, we need an energy partner that works with us and supports when opening new sites. Fidelity Energy has taken all the stress out of procuring our new energy supplies; we would therefore have no hesitation in recommending Fidelity Energy for its services.
